Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the dominant anthropogenic (man-made) GHG, but other gases, such as methane (CH4), nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, have an even greater global warming potential (GWP)....\">greenhouse gas<\/a>-neutral fuel in the region, German gas grid operator Gascade <a class=\"tooltipstered\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gascade.de\/en\/press\/press-releases\/press-release\/gas-transmission-system-operators-around-the-baltic-sea-have-signed-a-mou-to-accelerate-the-development-of-hydrogen-infrastructure\">announced in a press release<\/a>. The companies will coordinate the development of infrastructure projects for the transmission and <a class=\"lexicon-term tooltipstered\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/glossary\/letter_s#storage\" data-title=\"(Speicher) Because renewable production fluctuates with the weather, it often causes grid congestion and cannot always be relied on (see \u2192 re-dispatch costs), while \u2192 baseload power from conventional power plants is still used to ensure security of supply. In the future, storing renewable power...\">storage<\/a> of hydrogen in the region and also share information about market developments and projects related to production and demand of renewable &#8216;green hydrogen.&#8217;\u00a0 \u201cThe hydrogen infrastructure in and around the Baltic Sea must be planned and built in an integrated manner,\u201d said Gascade&#8217;s&nbsp;managing director, Ulrich Benterbusch. \u201cThis is the only way to leverage the hydrogen potential on our doorstep \u2013 both onshore and offshore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Baltic Sea region has considerable renewable energy resources and thus the potential to supply up to 45 percent of the clean hydrogen production outlined in the <a class=\"tooltipstered\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/news\/germany-welcomes-eu-plans-end-dependence-russian-energy\" data-title=\"Germany welcomes EU plans to end dependence on Russian energy\">REPowerEU<\/a> plan by 2030, writes Gascade. Specifically, the region boasts <a class=\"tooltipstered\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/news\/denmark-germany-sign-agreement-joint-offshore-wind-project-bornholm-energy-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-title=\"Denmark, Germany sign agreement on joint offshore wind project \">substantial potential for onshore and offshore wind<\/a>, which could be used for hydrogen production and to create a clean hydrogen market in the near future. Infrastructure is therefore now being developed to eventually deliver hydrogen from supply-rich regions to demand centres. While Germany is banking on sustainable green hydrogen in the future, it has limited potential to produce it on a large scale domestically.
