{"id":21384,"date":"2026-07-01T12:12:55","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T10:12:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cbcsd.cz\/?p=21384"},"modified":"2026-07-01T12:16:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T10:16:01","slug":"council-backs-european-energy-supergrid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cbcsd.cz\/en\/council-backs-european-energy-supergrid\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Backs European Energy Supergrid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 26 June 2026, <strong>the Council agreed its negotiating position on the European grids package<\/strong>, which includes a revision of the Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) Regulation and a new permitting directive (<strong>\u201cPackage\u201d<\/strong>). The Package aims to modernise and expand Europe\u2019s energy infrastructure in order to support <strong>electrification, decarbonisation, energy security and better cross-border interconnections<\/strong>. The Council documents are available at this <a href=\"https:\/\/data.consilium.europa.eu\/doc\/document\/ST-10746-2026-INIT\/en\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Package introduces <strong>a more coordinated approach to energy infrastructure planning across electricity, hydrogen and gas networks<\/strong>. A central scenario, to be developed by the European Commission with input from Member States and stakeholders, should help identify long-term infrastructure gaps, bottlenecks and investment needs.<\/p>\n<p>A key element of the Package is <strong>the use of congestion income to support better interconnections among Member States. <\/strong>The Member States agreed that a portion of the unspent congestion income <strong>will be reinvested into cross-border projects<\/strong> aimed at reducing congestion. The allocation is expected to increase gradually, starting at <strong>10% from 1 January 2028<\/strong> and reaching <strong>25% by 2031<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Council also placed a strong emphasis on <strong>security and resilience of the energy system.<\/strong> In response to increasing risks such as <strong>sabotage, physical attacks and cyber-attacks<\/strong>, energy ministers supported a new category of priority projects focused on protecting and repairing existing electricity infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Another important part of the proposal is the acceleration of <strong>permitting procedures<\/strong>. The Council supports faster and more transparent permitting, including the use of <strong>digital portals<\/strong> and designated authorities to simplify applications for energy infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>The agreed position now enables the Council to enter negotiations with the European Parliament.
