The Czech Republic still has significant potential in this area; however, according to the latest data, it is currently falling short of its targets. The discussion therefore highlighted the need to further develop effective programmes and tools that can help identify and quantify energy savings and incorporate them into both public and private investment decisions. The MICAT tool was also presented, enabling users to assess not only energy savings themselves but also the wider benefits of energy efficiency projects, such as reduced emissions and air pollution, health benefits and impacts on public budgets.

A significant part of the meeting focused on the phase-out of coal and the planned capacity market. As coal-fired power plants are gradually phased out, sufficient dispatchable generation capacity and ancillary services will be needed to maintain the reliable operation of the electricity system. A capacity mechanism is intended to create conditions for investment in the necessary resources by providing payments for the availability of capacity in addition to revenues from electricity sales. The Czech Republic is currently preparing this mechanism within the European CISAF framework.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of properly designed capacity market rules – from a technology-neutral approach and auction design to the distribution of costs among consumers. A key challenge will be to ensure that the first auction is set up in a way that genuinely supports the investments needed while avoiding disproportionate costs for electricity consumers.

Another important topic was the role of renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind power. The presentations demonstrated their potential to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and help stabilise electricity costs. Their effective integration into the energy system will, however, require further development of energy storage, flexibility and sufficient dispatchable capacity.

Special attention was also given to the impacts of wind power on municipalities and local communities. The discussion covered issues such as noise, environmental impacts and the recycling of wind turbine components, as well as the potential benefits that wind energy projects can bring to local authorities and residents – for example through contributions to municipal budgets, support for local activities or the use of locally generated electricity.

The meeting confirmed that a successful transformation of the Czech energy sector will require a combination of energy efficiency, renewable energy development, energy storage and flexibility, sufficient dispatchable capacity and a predictable regulatory framework. At the same time, it will be essential to find solutions that strengthen energy security and the competitiveness of the Czech economy while ensuring that the energy transition remains socially and economically acceptable for households, businesses and municipalities.

At its August meeting, the Sustainable Energy Committee (VUED) discussed key challenges facing the Czech energy sector and ways to ensure a secure, … Číst více

[577
