The new legislation represented by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (“PPWR“) sets out requirements for the manufacturing and composition of all packaging placed on the EU market and requires packaging to be reusable or recoverable, meaning it can either be reused or transformed into new products after use. For detailed information on the PPWR, follow this link.

The new framework aims to make packaging significantly less wasteful. Plastic packaging will have to contain recycled content, with targets increasing over time, while all packaging must be recyclable by 2030. New labelling requirements will also make it easier for consumers to sort waste correctly by clearly indicating what packaging is made from, how it should be disposed of, and whether it can be returned for reuse.

The rules further promote the transition to more sustainable packaging systems by encouraging reuse, refill and deposit-return schemes. Businesses will be expected to offer reuse or refill options wherever possible and without additional cost to consumers, while unnecessary packaging and excess empty space in deliveries will be reduced. From 2030, certain single-use packaging formats will be banned where more sustainable alternatives already exist, including small condiment sachets and miniature hotel toiletry bottles.

The legislation also introduces stronger environmental accountability. Companies using non-recyclable or environmentally harmful materials will be required to contribute to the costs of cleaning up resulting waste, while PFAS “forever chemicals” and other harmful substances will be restricted in food packaging. According to the European Commission, the new rules will help address the growing environmental impact of packaging waste while creating opportunities for businesses developing recycling and sustainable packaging solutions.

On 12 August 2026, new EU rules on packaging and packaging waste became applicable, introducing measures designed to reduce waste, protect the environment … Číst více

[577
