Further information about the Project is available at this <a href=\"https:\/\/cinea.ec.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/greensand-future-inaugurates-europes-first-commercial-offshore-co2-storage-facility-2026-09-18_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Project has received <strong>EUR 41 million in support from the EU Innovation Fund<\/strong>. Over an eight-year period, it aims to store approximately <strong>2.4 million tonnes of CO<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong> in the depleted Nini West oil field in the Danish North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>CO\u2082 captured from Danish and other European biogas production will be liquefied and transported to the Port of Esbjerg. A dedicated carrier will then transport it offshore to the Nini West field, where the CO\u2082 will be injected approximately <strong>1,800 metres beneath the seabed<\/strong> into a depleted oil reservoir for permanent storage.<\/p>\n<p>Greensand Future builds on a pilot project completed in 2023, which demonstrated that CO\u2082 could be transported across national borders and safely injected into an offshore geological storage site. The new facility moves the solution from the pilot stage to a <strong>commercially operational and industrial-scale model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The project may serve as a model for future European carbon capture and storage infrastructure.
