On 18 August 2026, the board of the IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards, “IFRS“) Foundation Trustees announced a series of strategic initiatives, including the approval of a new five-year operating and financing plan for both the International Accounting Standards Board (“IASB”) and the International Sustainability Standards Board (“ISSB“) for the 2027-2031 period (“Plan”). The Plan is intended to strengthen the IFRS Foundation’s long-term financial resilience and ensure that both boards have the resources needed to continue developing and maintaining global reporting standards.
For the ISSB, the Plan provides funding to support its priorities through 2031 while enabling a transition from its initial seed-funding model to a more durable long-term funding approach. The IFRS Foundation noted that more than 45 jurisdictions are already using ISSB Standards and that companies in 18 jurisdictions are expected to issue reports under those standards by 2027. The Foundation also confirmed that a new ISSB office in Geneva will be established during 2027, expanding its existing multi-location model.
The IASB’s funding plan focuses on creating a more diversified and sustainable funding base, reflecting the widespread adoption of IFRS Accounting Standards. The Foundation plans to continue seeking contributions from adopting jurisdictions while also pursuing support from capital market participants and enhancing intellectual property licensing activities. In addition, the Trustees published proposed targeted amendments to the IFRS Foundation’s Constitution, with comments invited to submit until 16 November 2026.
