On 10 July 2026, the European Commission adopted three certification methodologies for carbon farming under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (“CRCF”), Regulation (“Methodologies”),. The methodologies establish clear technical rules to ensure a consistent, credible and transparent approach to certifying carbon farming activities across the EU and represent an important step in implementing the CRCF framework. The new rules cover three types of carbon farming activities which contribute not only to carbon removals and emissions reductions but also support climate resilience, biodiversity and other ecosystem services, while helping to strengthen the long-term security of food and biomass supply, namely:

• agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils;
• the rewetting and restoration of peatlands and other organic soils; and
• afforestation.

By creating a trusted certification framework, the Methodologies are expected to help farmers, foresters and land managers access financial rewards for sustainable land management practices. The Methodologies were developed through a public consultation process and discussions with the Expert Group on Carbon Removals. Once the Delegated Regulation enters into force, certification schemes will be able to apply for recognition under the CRCF framework and demonstrate compliance with the EU’s certification requirements.
