On 18 September 2026, Greensand Future was inaugurated in Esbjerg, Denmark, establishing Europe’s first commercial-scale, fully integrated value chain for the capture, transport and permanent offshore storage of CO₂ (“Project”). Further information about the Project is available at this link.
The Project has received EUR 41 million in support from the EU Innovation Fund. Over an eight-year period, it aims to store approximately 2.4 million tonnes of CO₂ in the depleted Nini West oil field in the Danish North Sea.
CO₂ captured from Danish and other European biogas production will be liquefied and transported to the Port of Esbjerg. A dedicated carrier will then transport it offshore to the Nini West field, where the CO₂ will be injected approximately 1,800 metres beneath the seabed into a depleted oil reservoir for permanent storage.
Greensand Future builds on a pilot project completed in 2023, which demonstrated that CO₂ could be transported across national borders and safely injected into an offshore geological storage site. The new facility moves the solution from the pilot stage to a commercially operational and industrial-scale model.
The project may serve as a model for future European carbon capture and storage infrastructure. Its partners plan to expand storage volumes as further sources of captured CO₂ become available, contributing to a broader European CO₂ transport and storage network, particularly for sectors in which eliminating residual emissions remains difficult.
